• VST Precision Filter Baskets are carefully made and matched to have a total open area within +/- 5%. This ensures identical performance across all basket sizes. Other filter baskets typically vary from 50-200% of total open area, making them wildly inconsistent. 
• Enables the precision use of volumetric style espresso machines
• Holes are fabricated using a new micro-machine and finishing process
• Hole pattern is centered to +/- 1.0 mm and placement is oriented for uniform extraction throughout the entire puck
• 100% of holes are measured on every filter for min/max range limits of area and diameter to a precision of typically +/- 20 µm 
• All holes are measured for circularity, placement, square area, and blockage. Filters that do not meet VST strict manufacturing tolerances are recycled, not sold
• Wide outlet angle to prevent filters from clogging, which allows for fast cleaning
• VST Filter Baskets are made from 20% thicker food grade stainless-steel than other filters

VST’s first major contribution to the coffee world was the development of the portable coffee refractometer and universal brewing control chart, which put lab-grade analytics in baristas’ hands. Using high-resolution imaging technology that VST originally developed for forensic fingerprint analysis, we revealed that filter baskets had loads of problems: chaotic hole patterns, partially or fully blocked holes, and massive variances in total open area, even with the same model basket produced in the same lot. These are all variables that are critical to controlling espresso’s flow rate, extraction yield, and ultimately, flavor.

VST was the first to scientifically quantify this issue and, more importantly for the taste of that cortado you’re sipping, solve it. VST’s Precision Filter Baskets were born from this revelation.

Our new manufacturing and testing process didn’t just improve espresso, it gave the industry, for the first time, a true standard.
